What we treat

Types of Mood Disorders

Mood disorders are a broad category of mental health conditions affecting emotional regulation. We diagnose and treat the full spectrum.

Bipolar I Disorder

Characterized by manic episodes lasting at least 7 days — often requiring hospitalization — alternating with depressive episodes of extreme low mood.

Major Depressive Disorder

Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, and loss of interest that significantly interfere with daily life, relationships, and work for two weeks or more.

Bipolar II Disorder

A pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes — less severe than full mania — that significantly disrupts functioning and quality of life.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Also called dysthymia, this is a chronic low-grade depression lasting at least two years — often mistaken for a personality trait rather than a treatable condition.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

A type of depression with a seasonal pattern — most commonly in fall and winter — causing fatigue, low mood, social withdrawal, and changes in sleep and appetite.

Cyclothymic Disorder

Numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms over at least two years that do not meet full criteria for bipolar or major depressive disorder, but still cause distress.

Perinatal / Postpartum Depression

Depression occurring during pregnancy or after childbirth, including postpartum blues, clinical postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis — all requiring specialized care.

Substance-Induced Mood Disorder

Mood disturbances directly caused by substance use, withdrawal, or medications — requiring integrated treatment that addresses both the mood disorder and underlying substance use.

Recognize the Signs

Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary by disorder but share common patterns. Recognizing them early is the first step toward healing.

“You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared, or anxious. Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person. It makes you human.”

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation — typically 60 minutes. We’ll discuss your symptoms, personal and family history, current medications, and goals for treatment. This is a collaborative, judgment-free conversation. By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of your diagnosis and a plan for next steps.

How do I know if I need medication?

Not everyone with a mood disorder requires medication, but for many it is an important part of recovery. We base this decision on the severity and duration of your symptoms, your personal preferences, and what evidence shows is most effective for your specific diagnosis. We will never pressure you into medication — it is always your choice.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment duration varies significantly by person and diagnosis. Some patients find significant relief within weeks; others benefit from ongoing care for months or years to maintain stability. Our goal is always to help you achieve the best possible quality of life, with a long-term plan that evolves as your needs change.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth appointments that provide the same quality of care as in-person visits. Telepsychiatry is especially convenient for follow-up appointments, those with busy schedules, or patients who prefer care from home.

What if my diagnosis changes over time?

Psychiatric diagnoses can evolve as new symptoms emerge or more information becomes available. This is normal. We continually reassess your condition at each visit and adjust your care plan accordingly. An updated or refined diagnosis simply means your treatment can become more targeted and effective.

Do you accept insurance?

Please contact our office directly for current information on insurance acceptance and payment options. We are committed to making care as accessible as possible and can discuss self-pay rates and available options at the time of your inquiry.
